After my second season in management I am pleased to say we have managed to put some silverware on the table and banish the disappointment from last season of playing well for large parts of the year but narrowly missing out on promotion.
It has been a great effort by all the players and with the addition of a couple of new players joining the already strong squad from the 2007/08 season we were able to win the reserve division 2 by 8 points taking us back to the top division. We only lost three league games all season and managed to score 72 goals in 20 league games. We also progressed to the semi final of the Essex Junior Cup losing to the eventual winners, Alemite.
I think the key to our success this season was ensuring we took maximum points off the teams in the lower half of the table and making sure that we got something out of the games when we travelled to the higher placed teams.
The season wasn’t all plain sailing, as we had to suffer a number of injuries to key players early in the campaign. Our goalkeeper, Ian Stanley broke his finger on the 4th October 08 putting him out for the season. Our captain Tony Sutton suffered a horrific injury breaking his leg on the 13th September 08. I am pleased to say both players have made a full recovery and are looking forward to the forthcoming season. Losing our goalkeeper and captain was a setback for us but we were fortunate to have depth in our squad and overcome this hurdle.
The league was won at home on the 23rd April 09 against Runwell Hospital. They arrived with a full strength team and had everything to play for as they could have also won the league at that stage. In what was probably one of our best performances all season we ran out 2-1 winners to take the title.
I would like to personally thank the players for all their hard work and commitment shown throughout the season, including good attendance at training.
This coming 2009/10 season will obviously be tougher but with the commitment and team spirit all ready established in the side I hope we can take this forward into creating another successful season.
